Fail the bonus system?

by Paul de Blot October 15, 2009 permalink

It has the bonus system to a halt. Is it successful? It is uncertain. Does the cleaning or we throw away the child with the bathwater? What is it all to a bonus scheme and what is its meaning?

A reward is part of life. A life process will only flow when it receives an energy incentive. Aristotle says in his act-potential theory. A potential must be activated to take shape and become something. This also applies to people. They need an incentive to become active. Through our spiritual power we as humans to do great things. But we need help are stimulated. What is not stimulated sinks.

A control system is an incentive to be vigilant and not to make mistakes. A penalty system to fit and no punishment. A reward up to something big to come. Money money stimulates, excites servitude servitude. The question is what we want. Do we want more money, then a bonus in cash. If we want to state is the Queen's opportunity to get a medal. If we want better care, incentive than you think.

People are not philanthropists everything for nothing. They need incentives and want to be rewarded. People want as human beings are valued and rewarded, that is the incentive that they need. Someone who deserves a hospital is financially sound and no reward save millions? Unfortunately, this reward system in the banking system through the bonus system degenerated and got out of hand. The reward system has any suspicion that differs. People forget that in life people often needed something big to bring, often with their own lives at risk. Have no right to receive a corresponding reward?

A sincere thank you or a sign of friendship can already do wonders. Unfortunately, we are here so sparingly though it costs nothing. Even a sincere smile, a precious gift, but this too often we are so economical. We used the wealth of the heart to buy off with money. Friendship is not for sale. There is wisdom needed to properly reward without arousing jealousy. There is courage and confidence. Unfortunately, our minds are often too small to reasonable way of doing things. The heart and the imagination are better able to. The wisdom of Jeff Gaspersz can help us in this exercise.

    Dear Paul,

I have found a way to a sincere thank you to say.
I need a little positivity around the world to send in and I'm now on my site heldenenheldinnen.nl
Of fabric, felt and beads, etc. I make on behalf of hearts that I hero heroines nations send to people who in one way or another make a difference.
That may be oppasoma to donate a kidney. These hearts received the heroes completely free and for nothing. Just to say "thank you" and "keep up".

Perhaps you find it fun to look at my site to look (www.heldenenheldinnen.nl) and perhaps your hero to have a heart.

    Dear Paul,

First, my compliments for your clear and inspiring words! I would like to respond to the bonus system. I believe that the bonus system is completely out of hand. The question is whether the man a hefty bonus in a positive way incites, not to mention the excessive bonuses which bear no proportion to the work. For there we have it on anyway. Power, money and status, lower motivation and inspire people to not even consider loving others. Indeed, the stimuli that addictive behavior in the hand works, whereby man is in a downward spiral. Greed, always want more, grab and such is always at the expense of others. Do we really want the best for ourselves, others and the total, then we ourselves must first excite a better person. Every step you take has consequences because for yourself, others and the total. Of course, the man will be rewarded: a smile, a pat or a compliment always does wonders. However, any performance that comes with cash rewards, outside the normal salary for that in many cases is very spacious? It seems to me that the end is lost if we have such an attitude to life after love. Is not it time we go back to basics? What is really important: a viable and sustainable society or a world in crisis?

    Sincerely,

    Dear Paul,

An interesting and topical subject. A topic that we all share in it whether we are professionally involved in the financial nature or not and where we can and should take responsibility.
What is a possible starting point in learning to deal with different rewards? Back to the core of the current situation: an imbalance in give and take, from a perceived shortage that we are going to compensate by material (including financial) rewards.
How to learn to deal with them otherwise?

I have no exclusive or any answer, just an answer from my own way:
The only stimulus that is durable, is listen to the voice of your heart and follow the movement of your soul. If you learn to live so, you experience every day the best reward. Some of my 'teachers' I learned to go with my heart hurts (deficits heart level) and deep gratitude to experience what it especially for me was and is (reward). So take responsibility for my short and my abundance and learn to move freely therein.

Where (the pursuit) material rewards are not commensurate with the investment we have against this place, we confuse a material / financial deficit with underlying emotional, mental or physical deficiency.
It again begins by finding balance in your compassion deficit through life and discovering the power of gratitude for the people there for you and for what what is it especially for you. It asks again and again and open your heart beyond your judgments come. Then there is space to thank to believe and give thanks.
Therefore creates a sense of proper extrinsic reward.

In dealing with this issue at the global level requires it of me, us as Westerners to the balance of give and take (of our earth and our fellow human beings) to recover, to start close to home, in our own environment. And to the bigger picture from what I call working on 'Corporate Leadership': The connection between personal leadership (and leadership of organizations) and our contribution to social issues surrounding this case redistribution of wealth, peace and security.

    The core of my argument:
the answer to your question lies in our response to the deeper question of how we are inwardly and outwardly to deal with a fair distribution of shortage and abundance.

Thanks for your beautiful question. Good luck with your blog.

    Sincerely,
    Karin Raes

    Bonus or fails?

    A question the answer already!

Yes, works in hand manipulation. Is good for the common morality.
The difference between self-interest and public interest is difficult to define.

The only question that could be made is how much you have left for your fellow man. That is the key. Whether you something other awards.
This is difficult especially in areas where your self-interest does not apply. When will the West?

If there is a interest has been. What interest that are up to you. In every place on earth would the public interest can be gedient. We serve only the public interest if we have an interest.
But it is not that where no personal interest is the public interest gedient could be. Can indeed. But what gun you have another? Nothing? Then you get nothing.

How is it that the difference or similarity between the general interest and self-interest is so unclear?

My picture says, because it is the same. Just different.
The difference is self-interest versus other interest. All others are of general interest. The commonsense. What do we accept?
The agreement is important. There is really only 1 interest. Our interest. That we will classify, that the heavenly form of a beast exist?

    Dear Paul,
I read your blog several times and feel some confusion.
Do you really think people just live their potential as an external factor they are valued and rewarded? And that we "reward" people show that we appreciate them as human beings?

I believe the only man capable of its own veritable potential to activate and thus "create". This may be appropriate by dialing (with a capital letter). I mean here that this potential does not come from fear, anger or victimization. All greed, hatred, poverty around us and not valuing themselves (widespread) and others will certainly external triggers to truly reflect on the question "who am I," but I think that is not what you mean.

It creates confusion for me as we "value" of a neighbor (in whatever capacity) in one breath call with discussions on remuneration practices or (added) values. All people deserve mi appreciation, regardless of their contribution to society. To the person who they are. (This requires compassion, I realize). No reward can be a lack of self-esteem compensate for other than temporary.

I know from experience that the extent (amount) of an external "reward" (in whatever form) or the valuation of another of me as a person my self-esteem feeds a measure of the degree that I choose out of fear and to live as a victim and not as Creator. Continuous reflection on this point gives me the opportunity (incentive if you will) anytime again make new choices in this dance of life. So I choose my yardstick and not the neighbors or the car (whether sincere or not) pat on the shoulder of a client. In my work I try to keep these two apart, including by naming this clear and debatable. Not easy.

One last question: who are the "we" in your sentence: "the question is what we want"? I should probably not read that from you distinguish between people who (can / may) think about goals, incentives and rewards, and people that are stimulated and rewarded (to be), but in a man-appreciative way?

    Sincerely, Marij Vullinghs

@ Marij Vullinghs: Your comment is correct. It is a combination of internal and external forces

    Paul Day,

An inspiring story again with a very practical approach.

I am myself the question about the "stimulus" far from both my work and beyond. It is interesting to see that a correct interpretation of extrinsic motivation (rewards, praise) leads to an improvement in intrinsic motivation (actually the driving force behind the actions of all your transactions).

In the world of banks, insurers and intermediaries is one more value to attach to targets with rewards. That is not so strange as the whole sector is intended to "sell". To survive you need to sell, and that will be easier if 90% of your customers has little understanding of financial products. The temptation is too large to sell to "dumb" people and with yourself (pay), your manager (targets) and shareholders (dividend) satisfied.

However, many people in financial services-increasingly happy-encounter, the human factor and meaningful. You want the final analysis also help people with good advice, because you're good at and like you. The appreciation from clients is an eminently good extrinsic motivator that leads to more meaning in work.

A year ago I and my colleagues an innovative (financial) concept which we devised a number of principles apply:

    1. People need honest financial advice that is not colored by the interests of the consultant (banks, insurers, intermediaries)
    2. The financial awareness and understanding of people is generally very moderate. The main objective should therefore be to improve this by working with people to go through each step and thus the personal situation is clear.
    3. There are so many financial advisors, bankers etc. who do not want to work with targets and bonuses but simply wanted to help people, they must be able to do much without compromising their income (excl. bonuses).

Thus we came to "The Savings Planner. A foundation that households (average and above average) helps save on fixed costs such as insurance, mortgage, energy, telecommunications, etc. In addition, a 45 + experienced financial advisor deployed to the entire household to run and finally to present a report with an overview of the current situation and thereby save opportunities. It now appears that we thus average € 1200 per family savings. It pays a percentage of realized savings and additional revenues in the foundation are used to help people below average. (As of January 1, 2010 we are including with the support of the Ministry of Finance operates nationally).

It turns out that after pinpointing the reaction among financial advisers (from banks, insurers and intermediaries), 80% said they wanted to work for the foundation of the social thought, the absence of targets and independence. And at a relatively lower income!

Hopefully this small sample says something under 100 advisors across the sector.

Incidentally, I want you also like to point out the magazine 'Slow Management: also a very good development management in the country!

    Keep it up Paul!

    31 October 2009

@ Joost: thanks for your comment. Very true. The meaning gives certainty

  • October 15, 2009

    Dear Paul,
It also stimulates you by your thoughts down on paper my thoughts to answer :-) . Action gives reaction.
A pat on the shoulder, a small positive remark often does wonders for the person himself. Money gives more of a success by feeling, material or servitudes.
A balanced mix of the two is fine. Only balances are in constant motion and tilts the balance tips too far to one side then turn and he must find the right balance be found. That's okay, I think, as the prolonged balance are also very boring. Occasionally we have a nice walk through the valley going to know how great it is to climb the mountain to the top and always get better focus. During the trip is extremely important to your base camp never negligible. There should be a place, how meager, anywhere you can fall back and can come to rest and a new attempt.

Point n'est besoin d'esperer entreprendre pour, ni the Réussir pour perseverer

Our being would like (h) be recognized. All levels of recognition are good: from base to crown. For which recognition is financial reward? My income provides me a home base and that is fine. Dear Paul,

Wise words. Self I use quite often the saying "Pay peanuts - get monkeys". We get what we are calling us. Why are we paying peanuts for teachers in the coming generations of much needed knowledge should provide? Why deserves the "boss" of a whole country a fraction of the salary of the boss of a company? Imbalance must be put right and you should prune a tree to be better developed. But the professions that really contribute to society of today and tomorrow for me may sometimes get a little extra.
